Appeal for witnesses after cyclist dies on Christmas Day

A 66 year old cyclist from Hoddesdon was killed in an alleged hit-and-run on Christmas Eve.

Malcolm Boswell died on Christmas Day after he was knocked off his bike in Hoe Lane, Enfield, after a collision with a blue Land Rover Discovery.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 4.35pm on December 24 to reports of a bicycle in collision with a vehicle. The cycle was being ridden north in Enfield towards Hoddesdon. The vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

"London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade also attended and the cyclist was taken to Chase Farm Hospital where life was pronounced extinct on Christmas Day. A post mortem was conducted at Hornsey Mortuary on December 29 and gave cause of death as head injuries."

A 69-year-old man was later arrested in Enfield on suspicion of failing to stop after a collision. Police seized a 4x4 Discovery and the man was bailed until March pending further inquiries.
Scotland Yard have appealed for any witnesses. Contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage on 020 8597 4874, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, if you have information.

Ghost cycle aims

There are thousands of active cyclists in London, and facilities are gradually improving in most boroughs of the capital. The aim of this project is to identify and make visible accident spots around the city, as well as attempting to collate some form of statistical information regarding bicycle accidents. The original ghostcycle website served the area in and around Seattle in the United States. It appears that this is no longer maintained, the mantle now taken over by ghostbikes

Originally we placed ghostcycles at accident spots in line with the American ghostcycle site. However we are changing to be in line with the new ghostbikes site, and place bikes to commemorate those who have died cycling.

We will continue to collate data and are in the process of extend the relevance of the data to include HGV incidents, in light of the apparent increase in HGV traffic in London

Please log your incident reports so we can build the database of information. We urge you to report all incidents, and to pass around the address of the website. Please return to the site often. Also if you read about any incidents around the UK, please send us the details. Ultimately we hope that through information and education people will have a better understanding of the changes necessary to make our streets safer for everyone.
